Florida man charged with murder after fatal shooting during dog attack dispute

A confrontation over attacking dogs ended in a fatal shooting at a Leesburg homeless camp, where deputies say a man opened fire during a heated argument and killed the dogs’ owner.

LEESBURG, FL – A 43-year-old man is facing a first-degree murder charge after deputies say he shot and killed a dog owner amid chaos triggered by a dog attack Friday in a wooded encampment off Griffin Road. The victim, identified as Shawn Cyriacks, was found with a gunshot wound after a 911 call captured the escalating situation in real time.

According to a probable cause affidavit from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were initially dispatched to the 1900 block of Griffin Road to assist a woman who had been bitten by multiple dogs. During the call, the situation rapidly deteriorated.

“What’s going on?” a dispatcher asked, according to the recorded call. “There’s a gunshot wound, now,” the caller responded.

Argument escalates into gunfire

Witnesses told detectives that Matthew Lee Pasco, who had been staying at the camp, went outside after being awakened by the dog attack. He later returned and said he intended to kill the dogs, prompting an argument.

Investigators say Cyriacks, the dogs’ owner, intervened to stop Pasco. According to the affidavit, Pasco allegedly escalated the confrontation, stating, “If Shawn wants to get in the way, he can die too.”

Authorities say Pasco was armed with a firearm equipped with a laser sight when Cyriacks confronted him. The victim reportedly told Pasco, “You’re not going to shoot the dogs.” Pasco then allegedly replied, “You think I won’t shoot you too?” before firing a single shot into Cyriacks’ chest.

Deputies noted in the affidavit that the victim made no threats and that Pasco “deliberately and intentionally shot” him during the verbal dispute.

Investigators also say Pasco can be heard on the 911 call stating, “I am gonna kill it,” as the situation unfolded. The shooting occurred moments later, according to authorities.

Cyriacks was transported from the scene but was later pronounced dead.

Arrest and court proceedings

Pasco fled the area after the shooting and was taken into custody Sunday, deputies said. He is currently being held without bond at the Lake County Jail. Court records show his next scheduled appearance is set for May 18.
