GOP Strategist Tells New Jersey to Stop Blaming Jack Ciattarelli’s Loss on Voter Fraud Conspiracy Theory

Sherrill’s record-setting win prompts GOP warning against fraud claims

Trenton, NJ – A Republican strategist is urging New Jersey Republicans to shift focus away from voter fraud claims and toward campaign strategy following Mikie Sherrill’s record-setting gubernatorial victory, as online speculation about the results continues to circulate.

Sherrill’s 2025 win set a new high-water mark for total votes in a New Jersey governor’s race, with 3,171,151 ballots cast. She received 1,792,760 votes, defeating Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli, who garnered 1,378,391 votes, according to election data shared widely online.

Mike DuHaime, a longtime Republican strategist in the state, pushed back on claims suggesting irregularities in the results. “Republicans should not pretend they lost because of voter fraud. This is not why Jack lost, and lost by a lot,” DuHaime wrote in a post Sunday.

Turnout surge follows expansion of early voting

DuHaime pointed to structural changes in how New Jersey conducts elections, noting that expanded early voting has increased participation across party lines. “NJ has only recently instituted early voting which dramatically increases participation on both sides,” he said. “Better campaigns are the answer, not conspiracy theories.”

Key Points

  • Mikie Sherrill won with 1.79 million votes, the highest raw total in state history
  • Republican strategist Mike DuHaime rejected voter fraud claims after the loss
  • Expanded early voting cited as a key driver of increased turnout statewide

Data from recent gubernatorial races shows a steady rise in total votes over time, with turnout surpassing 3.1 million in 2025 compared to roughly 2.59 million in 2021 and 2.10 million in 2017. The increase aligns with the state’s adoption of early in-person voting, which began in recent election cycles.

Online claims have questioned whether Sherrill’s total reflects unusual popularity or potential issues with voter rolls. Some posts allege inflated registration numbers or irregularities, though no evidence has been presented to support those assertions.

Historical voting trends show rising participation

A review of past election results shows that higher turnout often benefits both parties, depending on the political environment. Democratic candidates have won the past three gubernatorial elections, while Republicans last secured the office in 2013 under Chris Christie.

Vote totals fluctuate based on competitiveness, national political climate, and voter access. Political analysts note that the introduction of early voting and expanded ballot access tends to increase overall participation rather than advantage a single party exclusively.

He also slammed Jack Ciattarelli’s campaign for being ineffective.

DuHaime emphasized that election outcomes should be viewed through that lens. “Better campaigns are the answer,” he wrote, underscoring a broader call within Republican circles to reassess messaging and voter outreach rather than focus on unproven claims.
