Two men are facing a slew of serious charges after allegedly opening fire on Philadelphia police officers during a car chase that ended in a foot pursuit and drug seizure.
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner and Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel announced Monday the arrest and charging of Nathaniel Smith, 30, and Khalil Flowers, 35, for their roles in the July 25 incident in the 5400 block of Morse Street.
According to authorities, officers in an unmarked police vehicle first observed the suspects driving erratically, including going the wrong way on a one-way street and blowing through a stop sign. As police attempted to stop the vehicle, Smith, who was in the passenger seat, allegedly pulled a gun and fired multiple shots at the pursuing officers.
The vehicle was forced to stop shortly after, prompting both Smith and Flowers to flee on foot. Officers chased and quickly apprehended both men.
A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed crack cocaine, marijuana, a 9mm firearm, and fired shell casings matching the scene of the shooting. Investigators said a third individual remains at large.
Smith faces three counts of assault on law enforcement, aggravated assault, weapons violations, and drug distribution charges. Flowers is charged with reckless endangerment, conspiracy, and narcotics offenses. Both men are being held on high bail, with Smith’s set at over $1 million and Flowers’ at $500,000.
Their preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 13.
