Harrisburg scratch off turns clubhouse manager into millionaire

Pennsylvania Lottery presents million dollar check to Dauphin County winner

Harrisburg, PA – A downtown Harrisburg lottery counter became the backdrop for a milestone moment as state officials presented a commemorative check to a Dauphin County man who scratched his way to a $1 million prize.

Pennsylvania Lottery officials gathered Wednesday at Cue-Nique, located at 505 Strawberry Square, where the winning Merry Money Match Scratch-Off ticket was sold. The retailer will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the $1 million ticket.

The winner, Chris Moppin of Dauphin County, is a lifelong Harrisburg resident and a longtime employee of the Harrisburg Senators. Moppin has worked for the Minor League Baseball team since 1987 and currently serves as clubhouse manager.

Moppin said the win did not immediately register when he first scratched the ticket. After checking the numbers again at home, he realized he had uncovered the $1 million top prize. His family was initially skeptical, including his five children, before the news sank in.

At 59, Moppin said the prize allows him to plan for retirement in about two years. He also plans to take his five grandchildren on a trip to Disney World and set aside funds for travel and long-term savings.

As clubhouse manager, Moppin works behind the scenes to support the Senators, overseeing daily needs such as equipment, laundry, meals, and facility preparation during both the season and offseason. He said the work often involves long days but remains rewarding.

Cue-Nique owner Anne Marie Jacoby said the store has sold two $1 million-winning tickets in roughly 20 years and described the win as meaningful for both the business and the community.

State officials noted that Lottery proceeds continue to support programs benefiting older Pennsylvanians across all 67 counties. Merry Money Match is a $30 Scratch-Off game offering top prizes of $1 million.
