Hidden camera found in Massachusetts college restroom

In a stunning breach of privacy, a hidden camera discovery at Williams College has led to 18 charges against a 21-year-old suspect.

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — Maxwell Hall was charged with 18 counts of illegal surveillance following the discovery of a hidden camera in a public restroom at Williams College, officials announced Friday.

On March 20, Hall, 21, was formally charged with Photographing, Videotaping, or Electronically Surveilling a Partially Nude or Nude Person in relation to a January 16 incident at the Lasell Gymnasium. A Williams College student discovered the surveillance device, disguised as a phone charger, in a second-floor restroom and immediately reported it to campus authorities.

Key Points:

  • Maxwell Hall faces 18 charges related to illegal restroom surveillance.
  • The incident occurred on January 16, 2025, at Williams College’s Lasell Gymnasium.
  • Authorities encourage potential victims to contact Sgt. Shuan William.

Authorities say the Campus Safety Service notified the Williamstown Police Department after the student raised concerns. Law enforcement agencies, including the Berkshire Law Enforcement Task Force and the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office’s Special Victims Unit, are jointly handling the case.

“The Campus Safety Service stated they believed there was a surveillance camera placed in a 2nd floor public restroom in the gymnasium,” according to the official release.

Investigation led by multiple agencies

Hall is scheduled to appear for arraignment at the Northern Berkshire District Court on June 2. No information has been released regarding the defendant’s legal representation.

Investigators have asked anyone who was present in the second-floor restroom of Lasell Gymnasium on January 16 between noon and 5:00 p.m. to reach out. Sgt. Shuan William is the designated contact for potential victims.

Community members urged to assist investigation

The Williamstown Police Department continues to work closely with Williams College officials to ensure student safety and gather evidence related to the case.
