ICE Raids in Hoboken Trigger Emergency Community Meetings with State Lawmaker

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Former Hoboken Mayor and current Assemblyman Ravinder S. Bhalla called an emergency meeting this week after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents conducted raids in Hoboken and nearby Jersey City, prompting an outpouring of concern from residents and local advocates.

The hastily organized gathering, held in a small community room, drew a standing-room-only crowd within hours. More than 100 additional participants joined online to discuss the aftermath of the ICE operations and what they described as an urgent need for community defense and legal awareness.

Bhalla, a longtime civil rights attorney, said the meeting was designed to bring residents together after reports of multiple arrests during the raids. “Hoboken and Jersey City will not bend to ICE’s lawlessness,” he said in remarks shared on social media. “Our communities are stronger and more resilient when we come together, like we did tonight.”

During the meeting, the advocacy group Spirit of Liberation – Jersey City led a “Know Your Rights” presentation focused on how residents can safely interact with immigration officers and support affected neighbors. The session included legal experts and local leaders who outlined steps for obtaining counsel and reporting enforcement actions.

While ICE has not yet released details about the number of arrests or the nature of the operations, local officials said they are seeking information from federal authorities. Bhalla indicated that additional community meetings and legal aid events are being planned in response to the raids.
