MONTAGUE, Va. — Deputies in Virginia rescued an injured bald eagle Thursday afternoon after it was found struggling to fly near Montague Loop, authorities said.

Sergeant A.J. McCall and Deputy E.M. Brooks responded to the scene and located the eagle, which they affectionately named “Flappy Gilmore.”

Although the bird attempted to evade capture, McCall, an experienced wildlife rescuer, was able to secure it safely. Officials noted that this marks McCall’s 24th eagle rescue.

The eagle was transported to the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center for rehabilitation. Authorities hope its injuries are minor and that it will make a full recovery.

“We are hoping it is just a sore wing and we wish him a speedy recovery,” the department said in a statement.

Wildlife officials continue to monitor Flappy Gilmore’s condition as it undergoes treatment.
