Chaos erupts during jail bookings as two inmates attack detention officers

Macon County, NC – What should have been routine booking procedures at the county detention facility turned violent when two separate inmates lashed out at officers during a volatile night behind bars.

The incidents unfolded on the evening of February 2 as detention staff processed arrestees into custody. During the booking of Rodman Rivera, a routine search raised alarms after deputies detected a suspicious crystalline substance concealed on his person. A body scan prompted a deeper search, during which Rivera produced an additional bag of an unknown substance believed to be fentanyl.

Investigators said Rivera threw the suspected drug at detention staff and then attempted to swallow it, sparking a physical struggle. During the confrontation, one detention officer was exposed to the substance and bitten. The officer was transported to a hospital for evaluation, treated, and later released in good condition.

At the same time, a second disturbance was unfolding nearby. William Jason Woodard, who was being booked on behalf of the Franklin Police Department for intoxicated and disruptive behavior, became combative with detention officers. Authorities said Woodard spat blood on an officer during the confrontation.

That officer was also transported to the hospital for evaluation and has since been cleared and is reported to be in good condition.

Sheriff Brent Holbrooks praised detention staff for their response, citing their training and professionalism during the incidents. He also thanked medical staff at Angel Medical Center for their swift assistance.

Additional criminal charges related to both incidents are pending as the Macon County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation.
