Inmate charged in Pittsburgh homicide dies after jail cell assault, officials say

PITTSBURGH, PA – A man accused of killing his girlfriend in a December homicide was himself killed inside the Allegheny County Jail on Wednesday, after what officials described as an assault by multiple inmates. Tyrone Good, 44, had been awaiting a preliminary hearing in the death of Michelle Sturdivant when he was found critically injured in his cell and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Good had been arrested April 15 in Atlanta and extradited to Pittsburgh to face a criminal homicide charge tied to Sturdivant’s death. Less than a month later, authorities say his time in custody ended violently.

Jail assault under investigation

According to the Allegheny County Police Department, the incident unfolded just before 1 p.m. Wednesday. “Multiple incarcerated individuals entered the male victim’s cell and assaulted him,” the department said in a statement. “Everyone involved in this incident is accounted for and the investigation is ongoing at this time.”

The inmate was identified by local reports as Good. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. County police said, “As is practice, an internal review by Allegheny County Jail officials will also be conducted.”

Good had been denied bail and was scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing next week.

Details of December homicide case

The charges against Good stem from a December incident on the 100 block of Watson Boulevard. Emergency crews were dispatched around 2 a.m. on Dec. 28 for “reports of an unresponsive adult female,” according to the Pittsburgh Public Safety Department. Sturdivant, 44, was found inside a residence and pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later described the case as suspicious. Investigators reported that Sturdivant’s body showed signs of trauma, including a swollen eye, bruising, and burn marks. A medical examiner ruled in February that her death was a homicide caused by blunt force injuries and extensive burns.

A witness told detectives that Good arrived at the Watson Boulevard residence seeking help, saying Sturdivant would not wake up. “She normally wakes up; it doesn’t happen like this,” Good allegedly said, according to the complaint.

Surveillance footage and evidence recovery

Investigators cited surveillance video that appeared to show Good dragging Sturdivant into the residence around 1:48 a.m. and leaving roughly 16 minutes later. Additional footage reportedly showed him earlier discarding items and moving her body from another location.

Police later searched an apartment on Wabash Street, about four miles away, where the pair had reportedly been staying. Inside, investigators found blood throughout the residence, along with bloodstained clothing and the victim’s belongings in a trash bin.

Authorities said Good fled the area following the incident and remained at large until his arrest in Atlanta. He was returned to Pennsylvania to face prosecution before his death in custody.

Allegheny County Police continue to investigate the jail assault, and officials have not released details about potential charges against the inmates involved.
