It was self defense No charges in Buncombe County shooting investigation

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, NC – After a review by the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office, no criminal charges will be filed in a shooting that occurred in the Bear Creek Community on Wednesday evening, October 8. Authorities concluded that the use of deadly force was justified in self-defense and to protect others in the home.

At approximately 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Patrol Deputies from the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a domestic disturbance accompanied by a gunshot. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the deceased body of William Jennings Bryan Clay III.

BCSO District 2 Captain Chris Stockton commented on the investigation, stating, “This decision reflects the tireless effort of the Patrol Deputies, Detectives, and Crime Scene Investigators who worked swiftly to gather an accurate account of the events.” He added that state laws permit individuals to defend themselves and others when facing threats to their safety.

The investigation highlights the BCSO’s commitment to impartiality and thoroughness in fact-finding efforts. “This case highlights how the dedication of BCSO personnel to impartial fact-finding empowers those who act lawfully in self-defense,” Stockton noted.

In light of the shooting, the impact on the community remains profound. “At the same time, this incident has forever changed the lives of several community members,” Stockton remarked. He extended condolences to those affected as they navigate this challenging time.

As investigators completed their analysis, the Buncombe County community reflects on the tragic events that unfolded.

No criminal charges will arise from this incident, which emphasizes the complexities of self-defense situations.
