Jogger’s grim 1980 discovery fuels renewed homicide appeal

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD – More than four decades after a jogger stumbled upon a body along a secluded access road, Baltimore County police are renewing their call for information in the unsolved killing of Phyllis Greene.

According to the Baltimore County Police Department, the discovery was made around 7:10 a.m. on February 4, 1980, when a jogger found the body of a Black woman lying on a Columbia Gas Company access road in the 9200 block of Dogwood Road.

Investigators determined the woman, later identified as Phyllis Greene, had suffered trauma to her upper body. Her death was ruled a homicide.

At the time, the access road was described as isolated, running through a wooded area not typically traveled by the public. Police believe the location may have been used to conceal the body after the killing.

Despite decades passing, the case remains open. Detectives continue to review information and encourage anyone who may recall details from the area, the time period, or Greene’s movements before her death to come forward.
