Maryland couple stuns themselves with $50K lottery win after double check

Scratch off regulars strike $50K surprise after Powerball try

Gaithersburg, MD — A Montgomery County couple who usually stick to scratch-off tickets found themselves celebrating a $50,000 Powerball win after deciding to try their luck during a billion-dollar jackpot run.

The pair purchased the ticket in late December, drawn in by a Powerball jackpot that had climbed past $1 billion. While they didn’t hit the top prize, their ticket matched enough numbers to secure a $50,000 payout.

The day after Christmas, they learned someone in their area had won $50,000 in the previous drawing. After scanning their ticket using the Maryland Lottery app, they received a message instructing them to visit lottery officials, prompting them to double-check the numbers multiple times.

After confirming the match on the Maryland Lottery website, the couple said they realized they had the winning ticket and later claimed their prize April 14 in Baltimore.

Lottery officials said the ticket was purchased at the 7-Eleven located at 20510 Frederick Road in Germantown.

The couple, who are new to playing Powerball, said they typically buy scratch-off tickets weekly and had experienced smaller wins in the past. They described the $50,000 prize as their largest win to date.

The winners said the prize comes after several challenging months and will make a difference for them.
