Murder suspect busted during traffic stop in Baltimore

A routine traffic stop led to the arrest of a man now charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a 41-year-old Baltimore resident, police said.

BALTIMORE, MD — A traffic stop in Baltimore led to the arrest of a man accused of killing a 41-year-old victim in a West Baltimore shooting that claimed a life late last month, according to Baltimore Police.

Police said 38-year-old Derek DeShields Jr., of Baltimore, was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 41-year-old Roderick Coney.

The homicide occurred at approximately 7:35 p.m. on Monday, June 30, when officers responded to the 1300 block of North Stockton Street for a reported shooting.

Responding officers found an adult man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the body. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police later identified the victim as Roderick Coney.

On Monday, July 13, DeShields was taken into custody during a traffic stop in the 600 block of North Washington Street.

He was transported to the Central Booking Intake Facility and charged with first-degree murder.

Baltimore Police have not released additional information regarding a possible motive or the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
