WEST TRENTON, N.J. — The New Jersey State Police will step up patrols across highways and waterways beginning Thursday evening as part of a statewide effort to prevent crashes and enforce traffic laws during the Fourth of July weekend.
Starting at 6 p.m. Thursday through 6 a.m. Monday, more than 142 additional troopers will be deployed on New Jersey roads to target speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving, failure to wear seatbelts, and driving under the influence, according to a release from the State Police Office of Public Information.
During the same holiday weekend last year, there were seven fatal crashes resulting in eight deaths, with drugs or alcohol cited as contributing factors in three of the incidents. Officials are urging residents to plan ahead if consuming alcohol, including using a ride-share service, calling a cab, or assigning a designated driver.
Motorists are also reminded of New Jersey’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to shift lanes or slow down when approaching stationary emergency or highway safety vehicles displaying flashing lights. Failing to do so can result in fines and increased risk of crashes.
The State Police Marine Bureau will also take part in Operation Dry Water, a national campaign focused on enforcing boating under the influence laws and increasing awareness about safe boating practices. The campaign runs throughout the holiday weekend.
“The Fourth of July weekend is a time to celebrate our nation’s independence with family, friends, and community—but it’s also a time to make smart, responsible decisions,” said Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police.
State troopers will be monitoring major travel routes and waterways across New Jersey through the extended weekend.
