New Jersey Teacher Sues Student, Family Over Social Media Allegations That Cost Him Coaching Jobs

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — A New Jersey teacher and volleyball coach filed a civil lawsuit accusing a student and the student’s family of spreading false allegations online that he says destroyed his reputation, led to multiple lost coaching positions, and jeopardized his career in education.

The complaint, filed in Ocean County Superior Court, alleges that Central Regional High School teacher and coach Joseph Torsiello suffered “severe and irreparable harm” after explicit images and screenshots allegedly circulated among students and across social media platforms earlier this year. Torsiello claims the posts falsely suggested he had an inappropriate relationship with a student.

According to the lawsuit, the fallout extended beyond social media, costing Torsiello his coaching positions at Central Regional High School and placing his role at Ocean County College at risk.

Lawsuit centers on social media allegations

Court documents state that on or about Jan. 31, 2026, explicit photographs involving Torsiello were allegedly distributed among students at Central Regional High School by a minor identified in the complaint only as “J.W.”

The lawsuit claims Torsiello had previously given J.W. limited access to the girls varsity basketball Instagram account so the student could post updates about team activities and games. The complaint alleges that J.W. later gained unauthorized access to Torsiello’s private Instagram account and reviewed personal messages and images intended for adults.

Torsiello’s attorneys argue in the filing that the student then shared screenshots, photographs, and related content online while falsely portraying the teacher as being involved in misconduct with a student.

The complaint further alleges that social media posts intensified around Feb. 17, 2026, when additional screenshots, comments, photographs, and videos circulated online accusing Torsiello of maintaining an inappropriate relationship with a student at Central Regional High School.

Teacher says allegations led to suspension and job losses

The lawsuit states that Torsiello was placed on administrative leave by the Central Regional School District beginning Feb. 2, 2026, and remained on leave at the time the complaint was filed.

According to the filing, Torsiello lost his positions as Central Regional’s men’s varsity volleyball coach and women’s varsity basketball coach. The lawsuit also claims he faced possible termination from his role as women’s head volleyball coach at Ocean County College.

Court records estimate Torsiello earned approximately $80,000 annually as a teacher, along with additional compensation tied to coaching positions and extracurricular activities. The filing alleges the controversy caused significant financial hardship, including lost supplemental income tied to athletics.

The complaint also claims the controversy affected fundraising efforts for “The Kivu Project,” a nonprofit humanitarian organization Torsiello co-founded in 2022 to support children in the Democratic Republic of Congo through educational and humanitarian aid programs.

Attorneys for Torsiello alleged in the lawsuit that online posts and screenshots harmed both his personal reputation and the organization’s fundraising capabilities.

Defamation and privacy claims seek more than $1 million

The lawsuit includes multiple civil claims, including defamation, libel, malicious prosecution, false reporting, invasion of privacy, and false light invasion of privacy.

Torsiello alleges that defendants knowingly spread false and defamatory information online “with malicious intent” and encouraged other students to share the material across social media platforms.

The complaint also accuses the defendants of publicizing private information and images from Torsiello’s personal life without consent.

According to the filing, Torsiello’s legal team sent a demand letter requesting removal of the online content, written retractions, identification of individuals who received the screenshots, and assurances that no further dissemination would occur.

The lawsuit claims the defendants did not respond to those requests.

Torsiello is seeking damages of no less than $1 million, along with attorney fees, punitive damages, and other relief the court considers appropriate.

Case remains pending in Ocean County

The lawsuit reflects allegations made by Torsiello and his attorneys and does not represent findings of fact by the court. No criminal charges connected to the allegations described in the complaint were listed in the filing pages provided.

The case remains pending in Ocean County Superior Court, where a judge will ultimately determine whether the allegations meet the legal standards for defamation and privacy-related claims under New Jersey law.
