January 19, 2024

NEWARK, DE — Delaware State Police have apprehended a 17-year-old from Newark on multiple felony charges related to a series of residential burglaries and a vehicle theft in the Newark area.

The incidents began on January 9, 2024, when troopers were called to the 700 block of Salem Church Road in Newark for three separate burglaries within 12 hours. The initial break-in occurred around 9:38 a.m., with the suspect stealing property from the first home. The suspect returned at about 12:35 p.m., attempting to enter a second home but fleeing after being confronted by the homeowner. Later that evening, around 8:00 p.m., the suspect stole an SUV from a third home’s driveway, which was later found crashed into a tree on the property. Additional reports of trespassing on the same properties were made on January 12 and January 14.

Through investigation and with assistance from Probation and Parole, the suspect was identified as a 17-year-old Newark teen on probation. On January 17, troopers responded to another break-in at the 700 block of Salem Church Road, where the teen was attempting to break into a car. Upon arrival, troopers located the suspect on the property. Despite initial resistance and an attempt to flee on foot, the suspect was swiftly taken into custody without further incident.
