Asbury Park man indicted on attempted murder and weapons charges

Freehold, NJ – A late-night burst of gunfire on a city street has now led to a sweeping indictment against an 18-year-old Asbury Park man accused of opening fire in the chaotic moments after a fatal shooting.

A Monmouth County grand jury returned a three-count indictment against Calvin Joseph, charging him with first-degree attempted murder and multiple weapons offenses tied to a September shooting in the 100 block of Monmouth Avenue. Prosecutors say the violence unfolded in two separate gunfire incidents within moments of each other, leaving one man dead and another wounded.

According to investigators, officers responding to reports of shots fired found two adult men suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim, 37-year-old Tyshan Small, was transported to a hospital where he later died. The second victim was treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Detectives later identified Jerod Jones, 32, of Neptune City, as the person responsible for the fatal shooting and the wounding of the second victim. Jones remains at large.

Authorities say the investigation determined that shortly after the initial shooting, a second round of gunfire erupted at the same location. Joseph was identified as the individual responsible for that second incident, which did not result in additional injuries.

Joseph was apprehended the following day by Asbury Park police and was found to be unlawfully in possession of a handgun. He now faces charges of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

The case is being prosecuted by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau. Information regarding Joseph’s legal representation was not immediately available. Jones is still being sought by authorities, who continue to ask the public for assistance.

Any charges are accusations, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
