Sheriff says former detention officer is accused of failing to carry out official duties

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — A former Buncombe County detention officer is now behind bars after being fired and criminally charged as part of an ongoing investigation inside the county jail system, authorities announced Thursday.

Sheriff Quentin Miller said former Buncombe County Detention Facility Officer Cameron Blaine Taylor was terminated Thursday afternoon before being charged with willful failure to discharge duties.

According to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, Taylor was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility at approximately 7:40 p.m.

Authorities said the former officer is being held on a $10,000 bond and is currently housed at a detention facility outside Buncombe County.

Officials said Taylor had worked as a detention officer with the sheriff’s office for less than one year.

Investigators have not released additional details regarding the allegations because the criminal investigation remains active.

Sheriff Miller credited the agency’s Criminal Investigations Division for its work leading to the arrest.

“The work will not stop to ensure our facility is safe and free of any activity that jeopardizes the safety of our officers and our detainees,” Miller said in a statement released by the sheriff’s office.

Authorities have not announced when Taylor is expected to appear in court.

All charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
