A National Guardsman witnessed the assault and helped lead officers to a 14-year-old suspect, police said.

Washington, D.C. — A National Guardsman witnessed a teenager allegedly pistol whipping a person in Northwest DC, leading to the quick arrest of a 14-year-old suspect, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The assault happened at approximately 5:25 p.m. Thursday in the 3100 block of Hiatt Place, Northwest.

Police said the National Guardsman observed the suspect striking the victim with a handgun and alerted authorities.

Officers quickly responded to the scene and, following an on-scene investigation, located and arrested the suspect.

A 14-year-old boy from Northwest DC was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a pistol without a license and possession of an unregistered firearm.

Police did not release additional information about the victim or the circumstances that led to the assault.

The investigation remains ongoing.
