Queens father indicted in death of 2-year-old son after severe injuries

Queens, NY – A Long Island City man has been indicted on murder charges in the death of his 2-year-old son, a case prosecutors say involved prolonged abuse and a delay in seeking medical care. The child died days after being hospitalized with extensive injuries, according to the Queens District Attorney’s Office.

Dayvon Morrison, 30, was arraigned on charges including two counts of second-degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child. He was remanded by a Queens Supreme Court judge and is scheduled to return to court May 1. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years to life in prison.

District Attorney Melinda Katz said, “A parent’s most sacred responsibility is ensuring the safety of their children. As alleged, this defendant chose to abandon that solemn duty when he inflicted life-threatening injuries on his 2-year-old son, Maliek, and then let him suffer.”

According to the charges, Morrison was the sole caretaker of his son and daughter on January 30 and 31, when the injuries were allegedly inflicted. Prosecutors say the child was not immediately taken for medical care.

On February 2, Morrison brought the child to Manhattan, placing him in the undercarriage of a stroller for approximately two hours before moving him. Witnesses noticed the toddler’s condition and contacted authorities.

The child was transported to a hospital and placed on a ventilator.

Extensive injuries reported

Prosecutors said the toddler suffered multiple traumatic injuries, including brain damage, internal bleeding, a fractured pelvis, and liver lacerations. He died two days after being admitted.

“Our thoughts are with the young victim’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Katz said.

The case is being prosecuted by the Queens District Attorney’s Homicide Bureau.
