Queens man sentenced after using car as weapon in Home Depot attack

MINEOLA, NY — A Queens man was sentenced to 22 years in prison for a 2020 assault at a Levittown Home Depot that left a store employee with permanent wrist injuries, prosecutors said.

Joshua Mitchell, 29, was convicted in May of assault, grand larceny, leaving the scene of an incident, and other charges stemming from the June 17, 2020 attack. Prosecutors said Mitchell attempted to steal more than $3,300 worth of plumbing items from the Hempstead Turnpike store and, while fleeing, struck a kitchen designer who tried to stop him with a Hyundai Elantra, launching the victim into the air.

The victim sustained multiple fractures and ligament damage to his wrist, as well as a torn rotator cuff and torn labrum. Despite undergoing three surgeries, he permanently lost motion in his wrist, thumb, and grip strength.
