YONKERS, NY – On September 6, Yonkers police officers and medical staff were assaulted by a man they were assisting into an ambulance. The man, identified as 39-year-old Johnny McCray, was initially found unconscious on the sidewalk on Yonkers Avenue near Cypress Street.

After trying to exit the ambulance unprovoked, McCray punched a police officer in the face, breaking his nose.

McCray was charged with Assault 2nd on a Police Officer, a felony, among other charges. He was held in Yonkers Criminal Court and later sent to County Jail. Despite the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office requesting significant bail, McCray was released by a Westchester County Court Judge after issuing an apology and mentioning an upcoming job interview.

McCray is on parole through 2027 for a 2017 Attempted Robbery conviction. He has 13 total criminal convictions, including six felonies and seven misdemeanors, spanning over 20 years.

City of Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano criticized the decision to release McCray, emphasizing the need to protect public servants and the community.
