Rideshare driver attacked over stop dispute in DC carjacking

Driver assaulted and carjacked in DC after dispute over route stop

WASHINGTON, DC — A man is in custody after allegedly assaulting and carjacking a rideshare driver during a late-night trip in Southwest Washington, following a dispute about adding a stop to the ride.

The incident happened around 10:17 p.m. on Saturday in the 4600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, Southwest. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the victim had just picked up the suspect when the two became involved in an argument over changes to the destination.

The confrontation quickly escalated, and the suspect physically attacked the driver, pulled him out of the vehicle, and demanded the car keys. Three nearby special police officers witnessed the incident and detained the suspect until MPD units arrived.

The victim was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Terrell Medlay of Northwest, D.C., was arrested and charged with Unarmed Carjacking and Felony Strangulation.
