Bear sighting sparks safety alert in Robbinsville after morning appearance on Hankins Road
ROBBINSVILLE, NJ – A black bear spotted roaming near Hankins Road Thursday morning triggered warnings from local police and a renewed push for residents to follow bear safety guidelines after multiple sightings in the area.
The Robbinsville Township Police Department confirmed the bear was seen earlier in the day and urged the public to stay alert but calm, emphasizing that black bears tend to avoid human contact when undisturbed.
While the bear has not been reported as aggressive or dangerous, officials reminded residents not to approach or attempt to feed the animal. Encounters with black bears, though uncommon, can escalate if the animal feels threatened or cornered.
Authorities are asking anyone living near wooded areas or open spaces to secure trash bins, avoid leaving food outdoors, and supervise children and pets when outside. Residents who do come across a bear are advised to make themselves known without provoking the animal.
Safety guidance includes backing away slowly, making noise, avoiding eye contact, and appearing larger by raising arms or holding up jackets. In rare cases where a bear becomes aggressive or enters a home, police advise residents to seek shelter, allow the animal an escape route, and contact wildlife officials.
The Department of Environmental Protection maintains a 24-hour hotline (1-877-WARN DEP) to report bear activity, damage, or nuisance behavior. The Robbinsville Police Department continues to monitor the area and will provide updates if additional sightings occur.
