Pedestrian killed in Ocean Township crash while crossing Sunset Avenue during evening commute
OCEAN TOWNSHIP, NJ – A 26-year-old woman was struck and killed Tuesday evening while attempting to cross Sunset Avenue at Route 35, prompting a full-scale investigation into the fatal crash, officials confirmed Thursday.
The incident happened just after 5:30 p.m., as Amatullah B. Morejon was crossing Sunset Avenue in the eastbound direction. According to preliminary findings, she was hit by a 2024 Infiniti SUV traveling north on Route 35 at the intersection.
Morejon was critically injured and transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 6:31 p.m.
The driver of the SUV, an adult male, remained at the scene and has not been charged. Authorities have not released his identity.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), and the Ocean Township Police Department are jointly handling the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant dashcam footage to contact Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Brian Boryszewski or Ocean Township Police Officer John Goncalves.
No traffic summonses or criminal charges have been filed in connection with the collision as of Thursday.
