Garnerville man arraigned after allegedly holding woman at knifepoint in Haverstraw abduction
NEW CITY, NY — A Rockland County man was arraigned Tuesday on serious charges after prosecutors say he kidnapped a woman at knifepoint in a violent daytime encounter in the Village of Haverstraw last month.
Eduardo Hernandez, 49, of Garnerville, was indicted on charges of Kidnapping in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree following his arrest in connection to the September 14 incident.
According to court documents and statements made during arraignment, Hernandez approached a woman around 5:25 p.m. outside a home in Haverstraw, grabbed her by the neck, and pressed a screwdriver to her throat while threatening to use deadly force. Investigators allege Hernandez restrained the woman with the intent to prevent her escape. The woman managed to fight him off and call for help.
The next morning, officers located Hernandez’s vehicle and attempted a traffic stop in Stony Point around 9:15 a.m. He reportedly fled on foot but was caught shortly after and transported to the Haverstraw Police Department.
The case is being handled by the Rockland County District Attorney’s Special Victims Unit. Supervising Assistant District Attorney Gerard M. Damiani III and Senior Assistant District Attorney Kaitlin DeLuca are prosecuting.
The charges against Hernandez are accusations. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
