Gaithersburg shopper scores $50K Powerball prize as jackpot climbs to $950 million
GAITHERSBURG, MD – A quick stop at a Safeway in Montgomery County turned into a $50,000 payday for one lucky Powerball player, just as the national jackpot surged toward nearly $1 billion ahead of Saturday’s drawing.
The winning ticket was sold at the Safeway located at 20211 Goshen Road in Gaithersburg and matched four white balls plus the red Powerball in Wednesday night’s drawing. The numbers for the August 27 draw were 9, 12, 22, 41, 61 and Powerball 25.
While no one matched all six numbers to win the top prize, the Gaithersburg winner became one of several players across the country to walk away with a third-tier win of $50,000.
Elsewhere, second-tier $1 million prizes were claimed in Arizona, New York, and Virginia. Maryland lottery officials confirmed that the Gaithersburg win marks the state’s 11th third-tier prize in the current jackpot run, which began after the last Powerball grand prize was hit on May 31 for $204.5 million.
Maryland players are also being reminded that a $100,000 winning ticket sold in Oxon Hill and a $50,000 ticket sold in Mechanicsville remain unclaimed.
The Powerball jackpot now stands at an estimated $950 million annuity value, with a cash option of $428.9 million, making it the sixth-largest jackpot in Powerball history. The next drawing will be held Saturday night.
