Bergen County man serves 33 years for series of armed robberies

A Bergen County man received a 33-year prison sentence for multiple armed robberies across Hudson County. Joel Krecz, 38, was convicted on several charges including four counts of armed robbery.

The Honorable John Young sentenced Krecz on Tuesday, October 28. His conviction stems from incidents occurring between late night April 29 and early morning April 30, 2022.

In each robbery, Krecz brandished a handgun and demanded money from clerks at various businesses.

The charges included one count of robbery, five counts of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and multiple counts of theft and aggravated assault.

A joint investigation involved the Jersey City Police Department, Union City Police Department, Secaucus Police Department, Hoboken Police Department, and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Gangs Task Force.

Krecz was identified as the suspect in robberies at a liquor store and gas station in Secaucus, as well as a business on Paterson Plank Road in Union City and another liquor store in Hoboken.

He was arrested on May 3, 2022, in Jersey City while armed.

Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Kenneth Paulus represented the state at sentencing.

The sentence is subject to the No Early Release Act and the Graves Act. Krecz was found not guilty of one count of aggravated assault during his trial.

Gunfire erupts in Jersey City as officer-involved shooting claims civilian life

The Attorney General’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting involving law enforcement that occurred early Tuesday morning. An adult male civilian sustained fatal injuries during the exchange of gunfire.

Officers from the Jersey City Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit encountered the civilian in the vicinity of Bergen and Virginia avenues shortly after 1:00 a.m. Gunfire was exchanged and the civilian was struck.

Emergency medical aid was provided at the scene before he was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:44 a.m. The identities of both the civilian and the involved officer have not been released.

A gun was recovered at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing, and no further details are available at this time.

A law enacted in 2019 mandates that the Attorney General’s Office conduct investigations into any civilian deaths occurring during encounters with law enforcement. This law also requires that findings be presented to a grand jury to determine potential indictments against officers involved.

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Multiple juveniles were injured in a hit-and-run crash on Monday, acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello reported. Investigators with the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit are currently working with the Jersey City Police Department on the case.

Shortly after 5 p.m., police received reports of individuals struck by a vehicle on Wilkinson Avenue, between Ocean Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Officers found four male juveniles—ages 13, 15, 17, and 17—who were involved in the incident while operating or occupying two motorized vehicles.

The four juveniles were struck by a sedan, which fled the scene after the incident. They were transported to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. Three of the juveniles remain hospitalized and are in stable condition.

During the investigation, authorities recovered the vehicle believed to be involved in the collision. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.
