JERSEY CITY, NJ — A man was stabbed to death Friday afternoon on Maxwell Street in downtown Jersey City after what officials say was a personal dispute that turned deadly, with police quickly detaining a suspect.

The fatal incident occurred on Maxwell Street, a short roadway in Jersey City’s historic downtown Ward E, where an altercation between individuals escalated into violence, ending in a stabbing and the victim’s death.

Councilman James Solomon announced the development in a Friday afternoon post, stating that the preliminary investigation indicated the fatal stabbing stemmed from an interpersonal conflict.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office later confirmed its involvement in the investigation and reported that it was working in coordination with the Jersey City Police Department. Officials said more details would be released as the investigation progresses.

Authorities confirmed that a suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident. The identity of the victim and the suspect have not been released, and no formal charges had been announced as of Friday evening.
