FRANKLIN TWP., NJ — Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald, alongside Chief of County Detectives Francisco Roman Jr. and Franklin Township Public Safety Director Quovella M. Maeweather, announced the arrest of 44-year-old Daniel Matthews from Schroeders Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. The arrest is connected to the December 2023 homicide of Franklin Township resident Artis Young, aged 46. This comes after the February arrest of Andrew Mumby, 47, from New Brunswick, in relation to the same case.
The Franklin Township Police Department received a report of Young missing since December 29, 2023, from his family on the evening of December 30, 2023. Investigations revealed plans for Young to meet with Matthews in Franklin Township on the day he was last seen. Young’s body was discovered in Brooklyn, New York, in the early hours of December 30, leading to a homicide ruling by the New York State Regional Medical Examiner’s Office after an autopsy.
Matthews was arrested on March 12, 2024, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by the Philadelphia Police Department. He faces charges including 1st degree Murder and 2nd degree Conspiracy to Disturb or Desecrate Human Remains, among others. He is currently detained at the Somerset County Jail awaiting a detention hearing.
Mumby, previously apprehended on February 7, 2024, faces similar charges and is also held at the Somerset County Jail pending further court proceedings. The arrests are the result of a coordinated investigation involving several law enforcement agencies across state lines.
