Stafford Target theft spree ends with arrest after backpack full of stolen goods discovered

Teen accused of stealing from multiple stores after prior trespass warning, deputies say

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — A retail theft investigation in Stafford County led to the arrest of a teenager accused of stuffing stolen merchandise into a backpack and walking out of a Target store after previously being banned, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies responded on May 29 to a larceny report at the Stafford Market Place Target after employees reported a suspect taking items without paying. Surveillance footage confirmed the suspect allegedly placed multiple goods into a backpack before leaving the store.

Investigators said the suspect had previously been trespassed from the location. During the investigation, deputies determined some items in the backpack were not from Target and were allegedly taken from other nearby stores.

The suspect, identified as Paul Cales III, 19, of Stafford, later admitted to stealing items from multiple locations, according to authorities.

He was charged with five counts of concealment and two counts of trespassing and held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.

Deputies said the suspect was formally trespassed from each involved store.
