Staten Island man faces charges after woman was fatally struck in a hospital crosswalk

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A Staten Island man has been arrested and charged in connection with a December collision that killed a 64-year-old pedestrian in a hospital parking lot, police said.

Surija Bajro, 67, of Clifton Avenue, was taken into custody on Thursday at 2:03 p.m. and charged with failure to yield and failure to exercise due care.

The charges stem from a December 11 incident when Bajro was driving a Volkswagen Atlas in the parking lot of Staten Island University Hospital’s North Campus. Authorities said Bajro was making a left turn onto a private roadway when he struck Kathleen Murphy, 64, who was walking in a marked crosswalk.

Murphy, of Willowbrook Road, was transported to Staten Island University Hospital North Campus, where she was pronounced dead.

Bajro remained at the scene following the collision. The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad continues to investigate.
