SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY – The police department of Suffolk County is pitching in to help the Ukrainian war defense effort after Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded the neighboring country 12 days ago.
“The Suffolk County Police Department is doing its part to support the citizens of Ukraine during their time of need,” the department said. “Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Police Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison announced the donation of more than 750 decommissioned bulletproof vests to Ukraine on Monday to aid forces during the war with Russia.”
The SCPD has a history of helping during wartime, the agency reported. In 2004, the SCPD donated hundreds of decommissioned vests to line vulnerable Humvees in Iraq, making the vehicles safer for soldiers.
“It’s a tragedy what’s going on in Ukraine,” said Commissioner Harrison. “Anything that can help them through this difficult time.”
Bellone said the Ukrainian resistance against the Russian attack was, “Absolutely inspiring.”
