Columbus teen charged after gunfire erupts outside police substation

Columbus, OH – A late-night burst of gunfire outside a Columbus police substation ended with an 18-year-old suspect in custody after a vehicle crash and brief foot chase, authorities said.

The incident unfolded around 1:10 a.m. on Sunday when shots were fired from a moving vehicle toward officers standing near their cruisers outside the 5th Precinct substation in the 1300 block of Cleveland Avenue. The vehicle sped away, prompting officers to attempt a traffic stop.

Police said the suspect fled and later crashed the vehicle. After the crash, the driver attempted to run and was seen reaching around the floorboard while ignoring repeated commands to show his hands. Officers were able to take the suspect into custody without further incident.

The driver was identified as Samatar Salad, 18. Investigators recovered a loaded semi-automatic firearm with an extended magazine from the driver’s side floorboard of the vehicle.

Salad was charged with three counts of felonious assault and failure to comply with the order of a police officer. The investigation remains ongoing.
