Two teenage boys were arrested Saturday after allegedly robbing two elderly women in a garden and stealing their vehicle, according to the Baltimore Police Department. The incident took place around 3:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Woodbourne Avenue in the city’s Northern District.
Police said the victims, an 82-year-old woman and a 64-year-old woman, were gardening when they were confronted by the two male suspects. The teens reportedly demanded the women’s property and chased them around the yard, striking the older victim in the head before fleeing with their belongings and car.
Officers quickly issued a description of the stolen vehicle, and with assistance from Baltimore County Police Aviation units, located the suspects after they abandoned the car and attempted to flee on foot. Both suspects were apprehended following a brief pursuit.
The suspects, identified only as a 16-year-old male and a 17-year-old male due to their ages, were taken to the Juvenile Justice Center for processing. Police confirmed that both had prior arrests for robbery.
Suspects released to guardians with monitoring conditions
Following detention requests, the 17-year-old suspect was released to a guardian and placed on electronic monitoring. The 16-year-old was also released to a guardian. No further charges have been announced at this time.
“The suspects then chased the women around the garden, striking the 82-year-old woman in the head,” police said in a statement on social media.
The 82-year-old victim received treatment for her injuries. The stolen property and vehicle were recovered by police. The investigation remains ongoing.
