Tesla driver crashes into cars at Delaware high school while allegedly drunk behind the wheel

Middletown, DE – A chaotic scene unfolded in a high school parking lot Tuesday afternoon when a Tesla, driven the wrong way through school grounds, slammed into three occupied vehicles — leaving two people injured and the driver under arrest for DUI.

Andrew Naylor, 45, of Wilmington, was charged with vehicular assault and driving under the influence after he allegedly crashed into multiple cars in the parking lot of St. Georges Technical High School on September 9 around 3:00 p.m.

Witnesses alerted a School Resource Officer after spotting the Tesla weaving erratically through the lot during school hours. Moments later, the vehicle collided with three other cars before coming to a stop. Police say Naylor remained in the driver’s seat as the officer approached and immediately detected the smell of alcohol. A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up several open containers of liquor.

According to investigators, Naylor struck:

  • A Volkswagen Jetta, driven by a 55-year-old woman from Delaware City, who was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries
  • A Chevrolet Trax, driven by a 42-year-old Middletown man, who sustained serious injuries and was also hospitalized
  • A Honda Civic, driven by a 45-year-old Townsend man, who declined medical treatment

Naylor himself was transported to a hospital for evaluation. Police say signs of impairment remained evident during his treatment, prompting officers to obtain a court-authorized warrant for a blood draw.

After being released from the hospital, Naylor was taken to Delaware State Police Troop 6 and formally charged with:

  • Vehicular Assault in the First Degree (Felony)
  • Vehicular Assault in the Second Degree
  • Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol

He was arraigned and released on a $1,100 unsecured bond.

No students or school staff were hurt in the crash, and classes at St. Georges Tech were not disrupted by the incident.
