Two New Jersey men convicted for roles in Newark drug trafficking organization, including murder

NEWARK, N.J. — Two New Jersey men have been convicted for their involvement in a violent drug trafficking organization (DTO) operating out of Stephen Crane Village in Newark, Acting U.S. Attorney Vikas Khanna announced Tuesday.

Michael Mayse, 38, of Newark, a leader of the DTO, was convicted of murder, drug trafficking conspiracy, and multiple firearms offenses. Gary Shahid, 66, also of Newark, a supplier to the DTO, was convicted of drug trafficking conspiracy, distribution, possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, and firearms offenses.

According to court documents and statements, the Stephen Crane DTO controlled an open-air drug market at the public housing complex near Branch Brook Park from February 2019 through February 2020. The organization trafficked heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine base, using a stash apartment in the complex to package and store drugs. Investigators used controlled purchases, wiretaps, physical surveillance, and other tools to uncover the DTO’s operations.

Mayse was also convicted of the December 15, 2019, murder of a DTO member in the stash apartment over a monetary dispute tied to the trafficking conspiracy. The DTO’s violent tactics and use of firearms to further its operations were key elements of the prosecution’s case.

“This case demonstrates the strength of our partnerships with federal, state, and local law enforcement and ensures that serious consequences will follow for these defendants,” Acting U.S. Attorney Khanna said.
