Welfare check turns tragic as woman found fatally shot in DC home

33-year-old woman found shot to death inside Northeast DC home

Washington, DC – A welfare check in Northeast on Sunday evening led police to a grim discovery when officers found a woman fatally shot inside a Minnesota Avenue residence.

The Metropolitan Police Department said officers from the Sixth District responded to the 4000 block of Minnesota Avenue around 6:58 p.m. after receiving a request to check on a resident’s well-being. When they entered the home, officers found 33-year-old Maurisha Singletary suffering from a gunshot wound.

DC Fire and EMS personnel responded but found no signs of life, and Singletary was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives have not released any information about possible suspects or a motive for the shooting.

The department’s Homicide Branch is continuing to investigate and urges anyone with information to contact MPD at 202-727-9099 or send an anonymous text to 50411. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
