14th Street assault leads to hate bias charge in Northwest

Washington, DC – A brief encounter on a busy Northwest block escalated into an assault Saturday night, ending with an arrest after a suspect allegedly attacked a stranger and used homophobic slurs, according to court records.

The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. in the 1500 block of 14th Street Northwest, where the suspect approached the victim and asked for a high five. The victim declined and continued walking, at which point the suspect allegedly assaulted the victim while directing homophobic language.

Responding officers apprehended the suspect at the scene. No weapon was reported in the incident.

Emundson Dean Robert, 26, of Germantown, Maryland, was arrested and charged with Simple Assault with a hate or bias designation. The case is being investigated as potentially motivated by hate or bias, a designation that may change as the investigation continues.

Officials noted that a hate crime classification by investigators does not determine how the case will ultimately be prosecuted. The incident is recorded under case number 26017097.
