WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY – A Mount Vernon man faces multiple felony charges, including second-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence, following the murder of 18-year-old Tamani Turner. Akeem Grant, 33, was arraigned on Thursday.
On Wednesday, April 6, at about 12:35 p.m., Grant allegedly shot Turner twice in the torso while sitting in his car on Garden Avenue in Mount Vernon. Turner was taken to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital and then to the Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.
Despite undergoing emergency surgery, he did not survive.
It is further alleged that Grant attempted to destroy evidence by setting his car on fire in the Bronx. He was apprehended at the Philadelphia International Airport on April 7, while attempting to board a plane to Jamaica. The Mount Vernon Police Department and the FBI’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force led the investigation.
