DUMONT, NJ – Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella confirmed the arrest of Esvin Duarte-Simon following an accident that left two pedestrians seriously injured on Friday.
Around 10:48 PM, the Ridgefield Police Department received a distress call about an accident involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Bergen Boulevard and Edgewater Avenue.
Officers arrived to find that a 2013 Subaru Impreza, operated by Duarte-Simon, had struck two pedestrians as they tried to cross Bergen Boulevard.
Both victims were transported to nearby hospitals – one to Hackensack University Hospital and the other to Holy Name Hospital. Duarte-Simon, suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, was arrested on the spot.
Duarte-Simon now faces third-degree assault charges by auto, resulting in serious bodily injury while in violation of driving while intoxicated. He was also issued summonses for reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to possess registration and insurance identification cards. He is currently detained at the Bergen County Jail awaiting his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ.
