Maryland State Police’s quick response led to the life-saving rescue of a 69-year-old Pennsylvania woman from a burning vehicle this afternoon in Frederick County.

Sergeant Brian Blubaugh, assigned to the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, was the first to arrive on the scene following a single-vehicle crash on westbound I-70 at mile marker 49. According to a preliminary investigation, the woman was traveling westbound in a Ford van when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway, struck an embankment, and caught fire.

Sergeant Blubaugh, in collaboration with multiple citizens, managed to extract the woman from the flaming vehicle, effectively saving her life. The driver was subsequently transported to Meritus Hospital in Hagerstown, Maryland, for treatment of her injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
