LOWE MACUNGIE TWP, PA – Authorities in Lower Macungie Township, Pennsylvania have confirmed a sighting of a mountain lion, triggering an immediate response from local and state police. Residents have been strongly urged to dial 911 if the animal is spotted again.
State police were called to the Village Round development around 11:45 a.m. this past Sunday, following reports of someone capturing images of a large cat in the area.
According to state police spokesman Trooper Nathan Branosky, “Upon further investigation, state police believe it was the image of a large feline—possibly a mountain lion—in fields behind Hanover Drive.” State police have since notified the Pennsylvania Game Commission about the incident. As of now, a Game Commission representative could not be immediately reached for comment.
Although mountain lions are not native to Pennsylvania, this sighting has raised concerns among residents and authorities. The Pennsylvania Game Commission states that there is no evidence to support a breeding population of mountain lions in the state. Nevertheless, local police are treating the sighting seriously. “Public safety is our top concern, and we are monitoring the situation closely,” the police said in a statement.
Residents are advised to be extra cautious, particularly when outdoors. Police recommend keeping an eye on small children and pets and making loud noises to deter the animal, should it be encountered. Mountain lions are known to be attracted to movement.
