Advanced License Plate Reader Leads Cops to Stolen Vehicle, Wanted Criminal

by Charlie Dwyer

EVESHAM, NJ – Evesham Police Department officers serving in the agency’s traffic unit used an advanced surveillance tool to apprehend a suspect on March 20. While patrolling the vicinity of Route 73 and Centre Boulevard, an officer employed an Axon Fleet 3 Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) mounted on the patrol vehicle.

Evesham Police Department’s entire fleet is equipped with ALPR technology, enabling the rapid scanning of vehicle license plates against a “hot list” of vehicles associated with criminal activity. The technology flagged a vehicle reported stolen in Philadelphia, PA, leading to a traffic stop and the arrest of the driver, Devin Jaquin Cha Welton.

Welton, charged with receiving stolen property, was released on his own recognizance. He awaits his first appearance in Burlington County Municipal Court. The incident showcases the pivotal role of ALPR technology in modern law enforcement efforts.
