New Jersey Congressman Dies After Complications from Heart Attack

Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-NJ) passed away on Wednesday at the age of 65. Payne, a native of Newark, had represented New Jersey’s 10th district in Congress since 2012. He rose to office following a special election to fill the seat of his late father, Donald Payne, Sr. A Kean University graduate, Payne had a political background on the Essex County Board of Freeholders and the Newark Municipal Council, recognized for his trademark bowtie.

Weeks ago, Payne’s office disclosed health complications from diabetes that led to a cardiac episode, with the representative initially receiving care at a local hospital.

Governor Phil Murphy noted Payne’s significant role in securing safe drinking water for Newark residents. Rep. Frank Pallone shared fond memories, mentioning Payne’s commitment to improving the health and lives of people in New Jersey.

Pallone admired Payne’s efforts in raising awareness about diabetes, preventing colorectal cancer, and advocating for the replacement of lead pipes in Newark, emblematic of his unwavering commitment to public service. Survived by his wife, Beatrice, and their three children – Donald III, Jack, and Yvonne – Donald Payne, Jr.’s untimely passing marks a loss felt across New Jersey and the nation.

Payne’s team indicated he was in stable condition last week, anticipating a full recovery. In line to run unopposed in the Democratic primary in June, Payne had a clear path to re-election in his deep blue district.

Murphy highlighted Payne’s dedication to the public good, praising his empathy and hard work in alleviating the challenges faced by working families, emphasizing his contribution to a fairer New Jersey and the longstanding legacy of service held by the Payne family in advocating for their communities.
