Judge Orders Second Toms River Murder Suspect to be Held in Prison During Trial

More than a decade after a 2010 Toms River homicide, two suspects remain jailed as they await their day in court.

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — Two Lakewood men accused of murdering Rondell Proctor in 2010 will remain detained in the Ocean County Jail as they await trial, judges ruled this week.

Jerron Evans, 41, and Maurice Cole, 36, were both ordered to remain in custody following separate detention hearings. Evans’ hearing took place on December 9, 2024, before the Honorable Pamela M. Snyder, J.S.C., while Cole appeared before the Honorable Dina M. Vicari, J.S.C., on December 10.

Both men are charged with murder in connection with Proctor’s death, which occurred on May 27, 2010, in Toms River. Authorities apprehended Evans and Cole on December 3, 2024, following a renewed investigation into the cold case.

Senior Assistant Prosecutor Kaitlyn Burke represented the state during the detention hearings. Details surrounding the murder and the evidence leading to the suspects’ recent arrests have not been disclosed, as the case remains under investigation.
