NEWARK, N.J. — If you have unused NJ Transit tickets from during the worker’s strike last week, you only have 36 hours to use them before they’re expired forever.
NJ Transit announced that all train tickets and passes which expired during the recent strike between Friday, May 16, and Monday, May 19, will be accepted through the end of service on Saturday, May 24.
The decision follows several days of halted service last week due to labor action that left thousands of commuters without access to rail transportation. The strike led to widespread delays and forced many riders to seek alternate means of travel.
NJ Transit confirmed the extension in a public statement on Tuesday via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating, “NJ TRANSIT train tickets and passes that expired between Friday, May 16 and Monday, May 19 will have their expiration dates extended through the end of service on Saturday, May 24.”
The agency has not announced any further extensions beyond Saturday. Riders with tickets dated outside of the impacted period will need to purchase new fare products as usual.
Commuters who held valid tickets during the strike window can now use them without penalty for the remainder of the week.
Temporary fare relief for impacted riders
The strike caused notable service interruptions across the region, affecting multiple rail lines and prompting temporary cross-honoring with regional transit partners.
NJ Transit has not indicated whether additional compensation or refunds will be made available for unused tickets beyond the extension period. Customers are advised to check the agency’s website and social media for any updates.
