BRICK, N.J. — Mark D. Carey, of South Amboy, has been booked into the Ocean County Jail following his conviction for fleeing the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred in Brick last year.

Carey, 34, was sentenced in connection with the January 13, 2024, incident that claimed the life of Julia Sutton, 56, of Weehawken. Authorities said Sutton was struck by a vehicle while walking along the shoulder of Route 35 South near Bay Avenue around 9:15 a.m. Carey fled the scene following the collision.

Emergency responders transported Sutton to Hackensack Meridian Ocean University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Following an extensive investigation led by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit, in collaboration with Brick Township Police and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit, investigators determined that a 1999 Ford Explorer registered to Carey was involved in the crash. Evidence confirmed that Carey was the driver at the time of the fatal incident.

He was arrested at his South Amboy residence without incident and initially released under New Jersey Bail Reform guidelines after processing. Carey has now begun serving his sentence.

Inmate records confirm six-year term

According to Ocean County Jail records, Carey was officially committed on June 13 and is serving a sentence with a projected release date of June 12, 2031. He was sentenced under N.J.S.A. 2C:11-5.1 for leaving the scene of a fatal accident, a third-degree crime.
