Four Arrested in Atlantic City Drug Raid at Convenience Stores

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — A significant drug distribution operation was dismantled in Atlantic City following raids at two convenience stores, leading to the arrest of four individuals. The Atlantic City Police Department announced the conclusion of an investigation into narcotics distribution with the arrests on May 29, 2024.

Detectives from the Special Investigations Section targeted The Afty on South Rhode Island Avenue and The Afty Express on Atlantic Avenue. Additional searches were conducted at a residence on Adriatic Avenue and three vehicles associated with the suspects. During these operations, detectives seized more than five pounds of marijuana, 3.5 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms packaged for sale, approximately $42,000 in cash, and two vehicles.

The primary suspects, Charles Butler, 46, and Tiarra Rodriguez, 35, were apprehended as they exited their residence. Amir Butler, 18, a family member, and Angelo Jones, 38, an employee of one of the stores, were also arrested and charged with multiple counts of drug-related offenses, including possession and distribution of controlled dangerous substances (CDS) and money laundering.

All charges include:

  • Possession of CDS (two counts)
  • Possession of CDS with intent to distribute (two counts)
  • Distribution within 500 feet of a public zone (two counts)
  • Distribution within 1,000 feet of a school zone (two counts)
  • Money laundering
  • Possession of CDS paraphernalia
  • Conspiracy

The operation was spearheaded by Detectives Nick Berardis and Chris Smith, with support from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office and the NJ Division of Taxation. The investigation was propelled by extensive surveillance, tips from residents, and undercover purchases.

The arrested individuals have been remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending further legal proceedings.
