WASHINGTON, DC — Police in D.C. continue to investigate in incident where a suspect was killed, and three Metropolitan Police Department officers were injured during an early-morning shooting Monday in the 300 block of Florida Avenue, Northeast.
At approximately 4:38 a.m., officers responded to reports of an armed suspect inside the lobby of a residential building. The suspect fled into an elevator upon their arrival. After additional officers arrived, the suspect returned to the lobby, where a struggle ensued during an attempt to take him into custody.
During the altercation, the suspect fired his weapon, injuring three officers. Police returned fire, striking the suspect. Officers immediately rendered life-saving aid, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as 45-year-old Derrick Williams of Northeast DC.
The injured officers were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Two have since been released, while the third remains hospitalized. The suspect’s weapon was recovered at the scene, and the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.
The incident is under investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigations Team and will be reviewed by the United States Attorney’s Office.
